Cedar of Lebanon is an evergreen tree with a beautiful sculptural form. It has a thick trunk that can be over eight feet in diameter and a cone-shaped crown that broads and becomes tiered with age. The grayish-brown bark develops fissures as it matures. The horizontal branches are of two types: long ones that form the framework of the tree, and short ones that bear most of the leaves and cones.

Process :

1. Place one cedar of Lebanon seed in each pot. Cover the seeds with a loose, 3/5-inch-thick layer of the sand and peat mixture. Slowly pour water onto the sand mixture until it settles.
2. Place the potted cedar of Lebanon seeds outdoors in a ventilated cold frame, under a sheltered porch or indoors in a cool room with six to eight hours of bright sunlight each day.
3. Allow the surface to mostly dry out between watering to keep the cedar of Lebanon seeds from rotting.
4. Transplant the cedar of Lebanon seedlings into a very large, fast-draining bed in spring after the last frost. Provide at least 80 square feet of space for each tree.

Do's

1. If a double leader develops remove the weaker shoot in autumn.
2. Pruning is generally not necessary to grow a strong tree, but may be required to prevent low-hanging branches from interfering.
3. Fertilize with formulations that promote woody, strong growth rather than excessive foliar growth.
